The Cemetery Project
Amistad organized a small committee of dedicated folks who sought an answer to this simple question: Where are the folks buried that died at the Augusta Mental Health Institute? Despite numerous obstacles, the committee persevered and was eventually able to develop a master list of all of the patients that were listed in patient records as having died at the hospital. State confidentiality laws were changed, which allowed for a master list of these individuals to be respectfully posted in the lobby of the Riverview Psychiatric Center. In June of 2004, a Memorial Service was held on the grounds of the old hospital and volunteer readers read off the names of the nearly 11,500 patients who died at AMHI.
